Northamptonshire Police is warning the county about a "disturbing" video being shared on social media.

They say a clip being shared on sites like Twitter and Facebook depicting child abuse has been investigated and action has been taken to safeguard the people involved.

It comes after a number of people from Northamptonshire forwarded the clip on to the force.

The video has now been found to have originated in north Hampshire.

In a statement published on the Northamptonshire Police's Facebook page, a spokeswoman said: "Northamptonshire Police has received a number of calls both last night and today (December 3) in relation to a disturbing video being shared across social media.

"The incident was originally reported to Hampshire Constabulary which has determined the video was initially circulated in their Force area.

"Some members of the public have been led to believe it originates from Northamptonshire, when the source of it is apparently in north Hampshire.

"Colleagues in Hampshire were contacted by Northamptonshire Police last night and they are fully aware of it and are responding accordingly.

"They have advised that the social media account is fake and all safeguarding on any persons involved or mentioned has been duly completed.

"We would ask people not to view or share this post and that parents and young people in particular are made aware that is now part of a police investigation by Hampshire Constabulary.

"Finally, we would also like to thank those people that have called in for reporting this incident to us."
