Tesco is recalling a popular ready meal over an allergy risk after it was packed with a different dish.

The supermarket giant is recalling a batch of its Oriental Kitchen Chicken Chow Mein product because it was incorrectly packed with Tesco Chicken Curry.

The mislabeled 400g packs with batch code L 069 F and ‘Use by’ date of 19 March 2017 contains egg, milk, mustard and sesame.

This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to egg and/or milk or milk constituents, and/or an allergy to mustard or sesame.

No other Tesco products are known to be affected.

The Food Standards Agency advise anyone having bought the product in question who has an allergy or intolerance to egg and/or milk or milk constituents, and/or an allergy to mustard or sesame not to eat it. Instead they should return it to the nearest Tesco store for a full refund. No receipt is required.

Over 65 weapons including samurai swords seized in Northampton during an anonymous knife amnesty will now be turned into an art piece.

Bosses at Oasis House in Campbell Street approached Northamptonshire Police after blade-owners were asked to hand in the weapons at an event on Friday.

The force hosted the event at a mobile police station between 1pm and 4pm in Semilong and said they had a "huge amount of knives handed in" as a result of a previous Chronicle & Echo story, which publicised the three-day amnesty event.

A spokesman for the Northampton Central policing team said: 'We have thought of a means of turning the knives surrendered into a positive thing and Oasis House have approached us and want to turn the knives into some sort of statue or art piece."

Superintendent Chris Hillery, said: “We have been holding a number of knife amnesties in Northampton throughout the past week using the mobile police station and I would encourage people to surrender their weapons during these events.

“Our message is clear, do not carry knives. Not only is it illegal to carry a knife in public, there is a real risk it will be used, either by you or against you, which could have very serious consequences.

“We are committed to tackling knife crime and the amnesties are just one of the things we are doing to drive down the number of people who feel the need to carry a weapon with them while out and about.

“Last year we took part in the national knife awareness operation, delivering educational messages to young people, using knife arches in town centres and proactive patrols across the county, and will be repeating that operation this year."

During the course of the three-day amnesty event, 143 knives and edged weapons were seized in the town.

He added: “We’re working closely with schools and other organisations to help educate young people about the dangers of carrying knives and encourage parents to talk to their children about the issue.

“Through Operation Worcester we have also been working to disrupt criminal gangs operating in the county and, in part, that work involves taking weapons, including knives, off our streets."

Anyone concerned about knife crime, or has information about a crime, can contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 111 555.

Poll result: Northampton residents say market should stay where it is

$

Over 80 per cent of people that took part in the Chronicle & Echo's poll have said that Northampton's market should remain where it is and not move to the town's main shopping street.

Northampton Borough Council is currently looking into ways to improve the market by creating another aisle and deep cleaning the square but opposition leader of the Labour group, Councillor Danielle Stone (Lab, Castle) has proposed going one step further and moving the market stalls to Abington Street.

She mentioned how the previous German market thrived on Abington Street and believed it would be likely traders would get more business if they were to move.

Off the back of this suggestion, the Chron asked readers to vote in a poll.

Results showed that 739 people voted and a resounding 81 per cent of readers want the location of the market to remain, while the other 19 per cent are happy to support the suggested move.

Social media user, Sandra Riley said on Facebook that the market shouldn't move.

She commented: "On days when the main market isn't on, what is needed is to expand the market and encourage a weekly Farmers Market, crafts, bric-a-brac stalls and car boot sales."

She said that Northampton Borough Council should publish market stall costs and details of how to apply for pitches.

Jade-Ami York agreed. She commented: 'We want local produce, things made by the local people sold at the market, that's what it's all about isn't it?

"Local meat, fish, baked goods, foods and handmade items, I know that's what attracts me to a market."

Elaine Edwards added: 'We have a Market Square, but it needs revitalising.

"Lower the charges and encourage the entrepreneurs to market their skills and talents and give local growers and producers a regular farmers market.

"Northampton once had a reputation for being one of the best outdoor markets in the country."

Even though 19 per cent of residents voted "yes" to the market move in the Chron's poll, there has been very little support on our Facebook page so far.

A 21-year-old Northampton woman has fought off "tough competition" against contestants from all over the country to take home the Miss Galaxy England crown.

In the lead-up to the grand final, Stefanie Williams put her Miss Northampton Galaxy title to "good use" and made more public appearances than anyone in her division, organisers say.

The contestant also raised £1000 for charity and "wowed" the judges on stage before taking home titles for the 'Best in Interview' and 'Best in Swimwear'.

Now she will compete in the international final in America.

Holly Pirrie, director of the UK Galaxy Pageants, said: "I am so pleased for Stefanie, she worked incredibly hard and she truly deserved to win the Miss Galaxy England title. Stefanie is an excellent role model for young girls and women across the UK. She is going to have the time of her life at the international final in America.

"Stefanie has taken home an incredible prize package including a personalised bag from Vanity Sparkle, a £250 voucher to spend at The Dress Studio, luxury Hair products from Duncan Fisher, and the list goes on.

"As well as all of these amazing prizes, Stefanie has won herself a trip to America and a place at the international final of Miss Galaxy. The international Miss Galaxy crown has already been won by the UK four times."

The UK Galaxy Pageants support 'The Christie', a cancer charity based in Manchester and the 2017 UK Galaxy finalists raised over £70,000 for the cause.

Tables are set to turn this week as students from a Northampton school will judge their teacher's talents in a day of entertainment for Red Nose Day 2017.

The event is set to take place on Friday, March 24, and organisers have said the day is likely to be the "biggest and best" fundraiser that Northampton Academy has ever run.

Lisa Hawkins, a teacher at Northampton Academy, said: “We are a caring school with inspirational pupils, who wants to give back to people who are less fortunate than themselves."

Over the past few weeks the school council has been busy organising a host of activities for the day, such as a red-themed non-uniform day for students.

The staff will be wearing 1980s-themed fancy dress and will put their skills to the test in a talent show contest judged by the students, with a special surprise planned for the principal, Nat Parnell.

The money raised by the school will be spent by Comic Relief to help people living tough lives in the UK and Africa.

Northampton online insurance broker announces sale of $490m to US firm

A Northampton insurance broker has announced its sale to US insurance provider, Travelers for an approximate value of £392m.

Having been previously acquired by Aquiline Capital Partners last April, town centre-based Simply Business more than doubled in value again on Monday (March, 13) as a result of the buy-out.

CEO Jason Stockwood said: “This is a tremendous opportunity for our company and employees, as well as a strong validation of our business model.

"I am excited about Simply Business benefiting from Travelers’ extensive knowledge of the US market as we develop our approach there, as well as the resources it has to support potential expansion into additional markets. Our shared values and commitment to innovation make this transaction a perfect fit.”

The value of the acquisition brought "huge benefits" for employees, the company said.

Simply Business has been named the ‘Best Company to Work For’ on two consecutive occasions by The Sunday Times (2015-2016).

The digital insurer has grown at an annual rate of approximately 20 per cent since it was launched in 2005 and now has over 400,000 active customers in the UK, making it the nation’s "largest" business insurance provider.

Now Simply Business plays host to 400 employees, over half of whom are based in Northampton offices.

Employees at Simply Business are also stakeholders in the company, and the announcement meant the staff all received an exit bonus.

One employee has already made plans to spend his money.

Peter Griffiths works in the customer relations team. He said: “I am planning to put the money from the exit bonus on a deposit for a house. The last bonus could not have come at a better time.

"My wife, Faith, and I were planning our wedding and the money went towards that. Now I’m thrilled to say Faith is pregnant and we are looking for a bit more space.”

Parents shocked as used needles left lying outside Northampton school for nearly a week

Used needles have been reported outside of a Northampton school six days in a row.

Shocked parents reported discarded syringes to Northampton Borough Council when they were first seen near a residential car park outside the academy on March 15.

But after environmental services contractor Enterprise came by to dispose of the hazardous waste on Friday, parents contacted the Chronicle & Echo to say there was still a needle near the school.

It is unclear if Enterprise missed this needle or if it is a new one.

Jutta Costello, who has a daughter at Northampton International Academy, in Semilong, said: "It's scary. When I think of how kids like to kick through the grass when they play. How easy would it be for a needle to go through a pair of school shoes?"

Samantha Jane Allen, another parent, said: "We are having issues with needles and syringes left on the path and grass way where the kids go. I complained to the Northampton Borough Council on Wednesday (March 15). But when I went back it was still there. I think it's disgusting."

Northampton International Academy is an all-through school that teaches children aged between four to 17

Headmaster of Northampton International Academy Roger Whitt said: "Parents should contact the school on any occasion that they see such needles outside the school.

"We have never had any such needles on school grounds."

The borough council’s cabinet member for environment, Councillor Mike Hallam, said: “We want to thank the members of the public that quickly reported a number of discarded needles close to Northampton International Academy on Mill Road, at the end of last week.

"These were cleared from the site the same day (Friday 17 March) as needles and syringes on the street or in public places are treated as a priority.

“We encourage people to continue reporting such instances to us directly on 0300 330 700, 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, or 01604 838 970 at any other time, stating where the items are and including a brief description.”

Man's car crushed and dragged by lorry in Northampton... but he saved his life by sticking his head out of the sun roof

A man whose car was crushed and dragged by a lorry on the M1 near Northampton has spoken out about his experiences.

His car was wrecked and he now deals with nerve damage on a daily basis after he was pinned against the central reservation by the drifting truck.

Miraculously, he walked away from the ordeal after finding a safe position in the car - by putting his head out the sunroof.

Wesley Belcher, 35, from Northampton town centre, said: "All I could do was try to keep the car straight. After that, you were just along for the ride as the car collapsed around you."

He was driving home alone on the M1 between J15a & J15 on February 23 last year. There were no other vehicles around except for a lorry in front of him.

Wesley said: "The lorry started drifting to the middle lane without indicating. I didn't think much of it. So I moved over to the second and then the third lane to overtake him.

"Then I saw he was still drifting over. I was only halfway past him when I realised he wasn't going to stop drifting.

"I slammed the brakes on. By now I had made a conscious decision to touch the concrete barrier to give him room.

"Then I'm out of control. The lorry squashed my car against the central reservation and popped the right-side wheels up off the ground and onto the barrier. It was dragging me dragged along the motorway. I had to keep the wheel straight or I might have gone under his wheels.

"The car collapsed around me and my stuff was flying everywhere. Sparks were hitting me in the face. I was grinding against the concrete and it was just a noisy, roaring ride for at least 10 seconds.

"I found a little bubble to survive in by putting my head out the sun roof, where the glass had popped out. If anyone else had been in the car that night, they would have been done for.

"The lorry driver must have realised what happened as we just came to a stop eventually. He leaned out the window to ask if I was alright. Then I called 999."

Emergency services arrived within 15 minutes and the fire brigade freed Wesley from his wrecked car.

He suffered only minor injuries from the dramatic incident, with two small cuts to his head and hand.

Wesley said: "Everyone was amazed to see me walking around. Because no one was seriously hurt I don't think the police arrested the lorry driver."

Northamptonshire Police were unable to comment on what action was taken over the crash.

Wesley, who is an electrician and has a long-term girlfriend, is now getting treatment for nerve damage sustained in the crash, which causes his hand to go completely numb in certain positions.

He said: "For the first few months afterwards, it was a right nuisance to drive as my hand would just go numb at times.

"I joke to some people that I was only driving on that section of the motorway on my way to buy more vaping fluid for my e-cigarette. So if I had kept smoking it would never have happened."
